Marina of 1150 berths on the Baie de La Baule south of the Loire estuary, one of the largest marinas on the French Atlantic coast.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south-west across the Baie de La Baule, clear of the rocks off Pointe de Penchâteau. Entrance channel dredged, maximum draught 3 m, though the harbour silts and there can be little water at the lowest tides. Entrance jetties marked by red and green lights, VHF channel 9. SW swell makes the entrance uncomfortable in strong winds, and a wind-tunnel effect just inside the breakwaters, with busy motorboat traffic at the entrance, makes berthing tricky. Berths run tight and catways short, so prepare lines and fenders well in advance.
Practical
1150 berths including a visitor pontoon, water, electricity, fuel berth with diesel and petrol. Expect around 40 euros a night, electricity included. The marina is dated and a full rebuild is planned for 2027; sanitary blocks are tired but clean with hot water, laundry at the office for about 6 euros, and wifi reaches the office area rather than the pontoons. Boatyard with 45 t travel lift, chandleries and sail loft on site. A Spar and good bakeries lie about 800 metres over the bridge. Railway station at 1 km with direct trains to Nantes and Paris.
Ashore
Restaurants and a rum bar cluster around the harbour master's office. The covered market on avenue du Général de Gaulle, 600 m from the harbour, is open most mornings, with the larger market on Wednesday and Saturday. Plage des Libraires runs directly east along the Baie de La Baule, though the beaches across the bridge are the better ones for swimming. Hippodrome de Pornichet Côte d'Amour, 1 km north, holds race meetings from December to August. Buses and trains reach Saint-Nazaire and its submarine base.
History
Pornichet grew as a seaside resort from the 1860s with the arrival of the railway from Saint-Nazaire. The current marina opened in 1973 on reclaimed ground between the old village and the sea.
