Free river halt on the left bank of the Saône at Montmerle, Ain, roughly midway between Mâcon and Lyon.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the navigable channel of the Saône. A floating pontoon about 100 metres long lies near the road bridge to Saint-Didier-sur-Chalaronne, with room for five or six boats and often full. Depth at the pontoon varies with the river level, from about 1.3 metres in spring to over 2 metres. No lock at the halt. Wash from passing barges and gravel boats can be strong, so moor well and stow loose gear; the current builds after rain.
Practical
Free water and electricity on the pontoon. Stay limited to about 24 hours. No fuel berth. Bakery, small shops and restaurants in the village within 300 m.
Ashore
A Spar supermarket about 80 metres from the pontoon is well stocked, close enough to wheel a trolley to the boat, and restaurant Kordialement nearby stays open when the rest of the village is shut. Village centre and église Saint-Étienne are a few minutes on foot. The Voie Bleue V50 cycle route along the Saône passes at the halt, north to Mâcon or south to Lyon. Footbridge across the Saône to Saint-Didier-sur-Chalaronne.
