Marina of 3400 berths on the Herault coast of Occitania, between Sete and Beziers, one of the largest yacht harbours in the Mediterranean.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from offshore clear of the Roches du Cap, marked by a cardinal. Entrance between two jetties with red and green lights, easily identified by the basalt cliffs of Mont Saint-Loup behind. The reception quay is in the Vieux Port, to port on entering, and if the floating dock is full boats go alongside a fixed concrete section with no shelter in strong W or SW winds. Sheltered from all sectors once inside, though the tramontane from NW blows across the bay. VHF 9. Max draught 3.8 m, largest berths take yachts up to 35 m.
Practical
3400 berths across eight basins labelled A to H, with mooring assistance on arrival. The capitainerie and some sanitary blocks are a long walk from the reception berths. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol at the entrance, open year round. Water, electricity and wifi on pontoons. Showers, toilets, laundry, wastewater pumpout. Travel lift 50 t and dry storage at Port a sec. Chandleries, sailmakers, riggers, three boatyards. Full town services and supermarkets 500 m. Expect roughly 30 to 55 euros a night depending on season and length.
Ashore
A water shuttle runs from the port to the town centre and beaches. The Halle aux Poissons by the harbour has fresh fish. Plage Richelieu sand beach 500 m E of the entrance, Plage de la Grande Conque black volcanic sand 1 km W. Musee de l'Ephebe on the harbour, a Greek bronze from the 4th century BC found in the Herault river. Fort de Brescou island fort 1 nautical mile offshore.
History
Agde was founded by Greeks from Phocaea around 525 BC as Agathe Tyche and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in France. The modern marina at Cap d'Agde was built from 1970 as part of the Mission Racine plan to develop tourism on the Languedoc coast, designed by architect Jean Le Couteur.
