Guide
Approach and anchoring
Straightforward approach from open water with no off-lying dangers. Anchor outside the bathing zones marked by yellow buoys, beyond the 300 metre line in around 3.5 metres. Holding on sand is reliable. Protected from N and NW, the dominant Tramontane, but fully exposed to any southerly swell, and an afternoon chop often gets up. Beach bars keep it noisy well into the night in summer, making a poor overnight stop in season.
Practical
No services on the beach, and landing by dinghy is awkward, the way to town running along the breakwater over large rocks with the harbour reception quay gate shut at 18:00. The port à sec du Cap d'Agde lies 0.9 nautical miles SW and Port Ambonne 0.9 nautical miles W, both on the Cap d'Agde marina complex. Water, fuel and chandleries are available there.
Ashore
Sandy beach directly ashore, a naturist stretch, with seasonal bars and restaurants along the seafront. The étang de Thau oyster beds and the old fishing harbour of Marseillan village are about 4 km inland by road. Canal du Midi terminus at Les Onglous, 5 km W, marks the Mediterranean end of the 17th-century canal.
