Marne-Rhine canal: across the Vosges to Strasbourg

14 places · Alsace and Lorraine

The eastern branch crosses the Lorraine plateau and then the Vosges at Freycinet gauge, with 38.5 metre locks. At Réchicourt a single 15.70 metre lock replaces six old ones, and the Sarre canal leaves just beyond for Mittersheim and Sarreguemines. Past Niderviller, two tunnels of 475 and 2,307 metres lead to the Arzviller inclined plane, where a 41.5 metre tank drops 44.5 metres in twenty minutes in place of 17 locks. The canal then follows the Zorn through Lutzelbourg and Saverne down to Strasbourg and the Rhine.
