Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach along the canal from the east via the 475 m Niderviller tunnel, or from the west via the 2 306 m Arzviller tunnel and the Saint-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane. Freycinet gauge, maximum draught 1.80 m, maximum air draught 3.50 m. Canal traffic follows VNF rules.
Practical
Kuhnle-Tours hire base with alongside berths on pontoons, water, electricity, pump-out and a fuel point for hire fleets, plus some visitor berths on the bank in front of the jetty with water and power. Reception and chandlery on site. Visitor berths run noticeably dearer than neighbouring marinas, useful mainly as a fallback when they are full. Boulangerie and grocery in Niderviller village 300 m from the base.
Ashore
The Niderviller faience works, founded 1735, is a short walk in the village. The Saint-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane is 3 km west along the towpath and lifts 900 tonne barges 44.55 m in a single operation. Cycle paths along the canal towpath lead to Sarrebourg 8 km east.
History
The Canal de la Marne au Rhin opened in 1853 to link the Marne at Vitry-le-Francois with the Rhine at Strasbourg. The original flight of 17 locks at Arzviller was replaced in 1969 by the inclined plane, the only one of its type in France.
