Opal Coast and Bay of Somme: Dunkirk to Saint-Valery

14 places · Opal Coast and Bay of Somme

Between Dunkirk and the Bay of Somme the coast has no sheltered anchorage: you hop from harbour to harbour with the tide. Dunkirk and Boulogne are open at any hour. At Calais a call on VHF 17 is compulsory before entering, and the west basin lock works from 2 hours before to 3 hours after high water. Gravelines dries and is entered around high water, within an hour either side for drafts over 1.5 m. Étaples, Le Crotoy and Saint-Valery sit at the end of channels that keep moving, and Picardie Nature asks boats to stay 300 m from seals hauled out on the banks.
