Approach and anchoring

Canal navigation, maximum draught 2 m. Saverne lies 4.4 NM to the east after a chain of locks, Altmühle 5.6 NM to the west. The Plan incliné de Saint-Louis-Arzviller boat lift, which replaces 17 locks over 4 km, is a short passage west of the port.

Practical

Sixteen berths along the quay, plus a further five to eight moorings along the canal near the town lock. Water and electricity are metered from machines, about 2 euros a token. A bakery, three restaurants and a small general store for essentials lie within 300 m, though there is no supermarket in the village. The railway station is in the village.

Ashore

Ruins of Lutzelbourg castle on the rocky ridge above the village, reached by a waymarked path from the port in about 25 minutes. Plan incliné visitor centre at 3 km, open to the public during the navigation season. Several GR trails cross the Zorn valley from the village.

History

Lutzelbourg castle was built around 1000 by the counts of Lutzelbourg and dismantled in 1523. The village developed along the Zorn valley, which the canal follows. The Arzviller boat lift was opened in 1969 to replace a flight of 17 locks built in the nineteenth century.
