Anchorage in Vaca Key Bight on the bayside of Marathon in the Florida Keys, just north of Boot Key Harbor.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from Florida Bay over shallow water, so watch the depth and favour high water on the run in. Holding is on sand. The bight is sheltered from north-west through north-east and from the west, and open to the south.
Practical
Sombrero Marina lies about 1.1 nautical miles west and Marathon City Marina about 1.5 nautical miles west. Marathon has supermarkets, a chandlery and fuel within a short dinghy run, and the City of Marathon runs the 226-buoy mooring field in nearby Boot Key Harbor.
Ashore
Marathon town centre is a short dinghy ride west, with supermarkets and restaurants along Overseas Highway. Sombrero Beach lies about 1 mile south of the bight. Crane Point Hammock, a nature trail and museum, sits near the city marina.
