Approach and anchoring

St. Michaels harbour opens off the Miles River and is reached through marked water from Chesapeake Bay. The bottom is sand. Open ground gives shelter except from south through east, and the harbour fills quickly with traffic in season.

Practical

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum members marina and Higgins Yacht Yard both lie 0.2 nm south. The town quay, shops and restaurants are within walking distance of a dinghy landing.

Ashore

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum sits on Navy Point at the head of the harbour, 0.2 nm south. Its 18-acre campus has a floating fleet of historic Bay craft and a working boatyard. St. Michaels town centre, with shops and restaurants, is a short walk from the waterfront.

History

St. Michaels was a shipbuilding and oystering port from the 18th century. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum was founded in 1965 on the former site of seafood packing houses and workboat docks at Navy Point.
