Open anchorage off the village of Claiborne, on the point dividing Eastern Bay from the Miles River in Talbot County, Maryland.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from Eastern Bay in the lee of the point. The cove is broad but shoals towards the shore, so anchor in mid-water and watch the sounder on the way in. Holding is in mud and sand.

Practical

No facilities at the anchorage itself. The Miles River Yacht Club lies 3.3 NM to the south-east and the CBMM Members Marina 3.8 NM south-east, both off St Michaels for fuel, water and provisions.

Ashore

Claiborne village has a public boat ramp and the old ferry wharf. St Michaels, with shops, restaurants and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, is about 4 NM south-east up the Miles River.

History

Claiborne grew up around a steamboat and rail ferry terminal that linked Baltimore traffic to the Eastern Shore in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The ferry trade faded once road bridges crossed the bay, leaving a quiet residential village.
