Anchorage inside Stage Island in Wood Island Harbour, near Biddeford Pool, in Maine, with a mud bottom.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
The harbour lies about midway between Portland and Portsmouth. The anchorage gives shelter from west through south winds. The bottom is mud, with good holding. The channel and anchorage are shallow, and limit boats drawing more than 7 feet at low water; dredging in 2020 and 2021 opened more of the harbour to deeper-draught boats.
Practical
Biddeford Pool Yacht Club lies about 0.6 miles south-west and manages guest moorings with a launch service. Norwoods Marina is about 1.6 miles west.
Ashore
The Stage Island Monument, a stone day beacon built in 1825, marks the northern entrance to Wood Island Harbour. The island was named for the wooden stages on which colonial fishermen dried their catch.
