Saint-Trojan-les-Bains developed as a sea-bathing resort from the late nineteenth century, combining an older oyster-farming and fishing village with a new pine forest planted to fix the coastal dunes. The narrow-gauge tourist railway has run through the forest to the ocean beach since 1963.
