Sand bank anchorage in the Pertuis de Maumusson area, off Île d'Oléron, 0.8 NM SE of Le Château-d'Oléron in Charente-Maritime.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Strong tidal streams run through the Coureau d'Oléron and over the bank; plan transits near slack water. Channels are marked by lateral buoys that are frequently moved because of silting. Soundings change season to season; a recent chart or Navicarte update is essential. Holding on fine sand.
Practical
Forain mooring, no services. Exposure to wind swell from all sectors; shelter only behind the bank at low water. Nearest harbour services at Le Château-d'Oléron, 0.8 NM NW, with water, fuel and a boatyard. Saint-Trojan-les-Bains harbour sits 2.2 NM SW.
Ashore
Le Château-d'Oléron is ringed by a Vauban citadel begun in 1630. The former oyster-farming cabins along the channel have been converted into artist studios and workshops. Oyster producers along the Route des Huîtres sell direct from the claires.
