Approach and anchoring
Access around high water through a marked channel across mudflats. VHF channel 9. Maximum draught 1.5 m and the harbour dries at low water of spring tides. Watch for oyster parks along the channel marked by withies. Saint-Trojan-les-Bains lies 2.4 NM south and Brouage 5 NM east.
Practical
Around 200 berths including visitor places. Fuel station on site. Water and electricity at the pontoons. Bakery, supermarket and cafes in the town, a few minutes' walk from the quay.
Ashore
Citadel of Le Chateau-d'Oleron built under Louis XIII and reinforced by Vauban, with ramparts open to walkers. Port des Salines, a reconstituted salt-marsh site with coloured fishermen's huts turned into craft workshops, 1 km south. Oyster tasting cabins along the quays.
History
The citadel was commissioned by Cardinal Richelieu in the 1630s to protect the Charente coast and the Brouage arsenal across the mudflats. It was later adapted by Vauban.
