Anchorage off Southport, North Carolina, near the mouth of the Cape Fear River where it meets the Intracoastal Waterway, mud bottom.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
The anchorage lies off the Southport waterfront, close to where the Cape Fear River, the ICW and the ocean inlet converge. The river runs a strong tidal stream, so allow for swinging room. Shoaling has been reported in places, so sound the depths on the way in.
Practical
Southport Marina lies about 0.8 nm north-west, with fuel, water and transient berths, and Indigo Plantation Marina is around 1.2 nm west. A dinghy landing gives access to the town centre.
Ashore
Southport keeps a historic waterfront of low-country houses along Bay Street, with shops, restaurants and a grocery within walking distance. The North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport sits a short walk from the river.
