Guide
Approach and anchoring
The anchorage gives shelter from east and south-east winds but lies open to other directions. The bottom is sand. The waters off the island are strewn with ledges and shoals, so keep to buoyed water on the approach. Greens Ledge Light stands to the west of the island.
Practical
Norwalk Yacht Club lies about 0.9 miles north-west and The Boatworks about 1.2 miles north-west, both up towards the Norwalk River for fuel, water and repairs.
Ashore
Sheffield Island Light, a stone lighthouse built in 1868, stands at the western end of the island and is open to visitors from May to September. The eastern part of the island is the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, a nesting ground for herons and egrets.
