Anchorage in Sandy Hook Bay behind the barrier spit of Sandy Hook, New Jersey, at the southern entrance to New York Harbour.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approached from Sandy Hook Bay on the west side of the spit. Shallow-draught boats find room to anchor inside the hook. Keep clear of shoaling off the points and of submerged ruins and fish traps near the old bunker; do not cut the corner after dark.
Practical
Anchorage on a sand bottom, sheltered from N, NE, E and SE behind the spit. No dinghy dock, but the sand beach takes a tender. The anchorage fills through the afternoon in season. Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club and the municipal harbour lie 3.2 miles S for berths and provisions.
Ashore
Sandy Hook is part of Gateway National Recreation Area. Ocean beaches, the 1764 Sandy Hook Lighthouse, the oldest working lighthouse in the United States, and the Fort Hancock historic district are all on the spit, reachable on foot or by bicycle along the park paths.
