Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the NE across the Golfe de Saint-Tropez, entered between Cap Camarat to the S and Cap Saint-Pierre to the N. Sand bottom with patches of posidonia, holding fair on sand, avoid the seagrass. Shelter from E through S to SW. Open to the N and NE, untenable in a tramontane. Beware of heavy summer traffic and the seaplane landing area.
Practical
Water available on the quays of Saint-Tropez harbour. Port du Pilon 0.1 NM SE for small craft berths. Port de Saint-Tropez 0.3 NM NE for 734 berths, fuel, chandlery and all services, with the capitainerie on VHF 9.
Ashore
Musée de l'Annonciade 300 m from the harbour holds paintings by Signac, Matisse and Bonnard in a former 16th century chapel. Citadelle de Saint-Tropez 600 m E above the port, built in 1602, houses the Musée d'Histoire Maritime. Place des Lices 400 m inland for the Tuesday and Saturday market.
History
Saint-Tropez took its name from the Roman martyr Torpes of Pisa, beheaded under Nero in 68 AD. The town was a fishing port until Paul Signac settled here in 1892 and drew Matisse, Derain and Bonnard, who painted the bay at the start of the 20th century.
