Guide
Approach and anchoring
The docks sit in Fort Adams State Park on the south-west shore of Newport Harbour, near Brenton Cove. There are dinghy docks for tender access and a launching ramp.
Practical
The centre runs sailing courses from age five upward and rents J/7 keelboats and dinghies. Two boat hoists, dry storage, regatta dockage and free parking are on site. Newport town quays lie a short way north-east.
Ashore
Fort Adams, a 19th-century coastal fort, stands beside the docks and hosts the Newport Folk Festival and Newport Jazz Festival each summer. The park has lawns and shoreside walking paths.
History
Sail Newport was founded in 1983, the year after the United States lost the America's Cup, to keep public sailing access on Narragansett Bay. It is now Rhode Island's public sailing centre.
