Anchorage and mooring field in Newport Harbour, Rhode Island, off Fort Adams State Park, on a sand and mud bottom.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter from Newport Harbour and round into the cove south of Fort Adams. Sand and mud give good holding. The cove is sheltered from W, S and SE through E, but open to the north towards the main harbour. Mooring buoys occupy much of the cove, so anchoring room is limited in season.
Practical
Sail Newport sits 0.3 miles to the west and the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court is 0.2 miles to the east. Newport town quay, with chandlery, provisions and restaurants, is a short tender run across the harbour.
Ashore
Fort Adams State Park surrounds the cove, with the fort itself open for guided tours. The granite Fort Adams was built between 1824 and 1857 to defend the harbour entrance and has a network of underground tunnels. The park hosts the Newport Folk and Jazz festivals each summer.
History
Fort Adams was named after President John Adams and remained an active army post until 1950. Rhode Island took over the site in 1965 and runs it as a state park.
