Approach and anchoring

Open approach from the west with no off-lying dangers in the main bay. Drop anchor on sand in 4 to 8 metres off the beach north of the Sagone river mouth. Holding is reported as good on clean sand, with patches of posidonia to avoid for environmental and grip reasons.

Practical

Port de Sagone lies 0.1 NM north for water, waste and basic supplies. Village shops, bakery and restaurants along the seafront within walking distance of a dinghy landing on the beach.

Ashore

Genoese tower of Sagone at the south end of the bay, 16th century watchtower on the headland. Beach of Sagone runs 1.5 km along the shore. Cargèse, known for its Greek Orthodox and Latin Catholic churches facing each other, sits 4.2 NM west along the coast.

History

The gulf was the seat of the medieval bishopric of Sagone, whose ruined cathedral of Sant Appianu stands inland near the river. The Genoese tower was built in the 16th century as part of the coastal defence line against Barbary raids.
