Anchorage off Rodriguez Key, a nearshore mangrove island in Hawk Channel just south of Key Largo, in the Florida Keys.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Anchor on the lee side of the key for shelter from N to NE, with no cover from southerly winds. Holding is sand with patches of weed. Water shoals quickly to the north of the key, where maximum depth is about 6 feet, so the northern berth suits fair weather only. Molasses Reef Marina lies 2.2 miles to the north-east.
Ashore
Rodriguez Key is uninhabited and ringed by a shallow mud bank with coral and coralline algae. Reaching Key Largo means a long tender run. The protected outer reefs along Hawk Channel are within easy reach for snorkelling.
