Reef anchorage off Key Largo in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, marked by a 45-foot lighted steel tower. Sand bottom.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Pick up one of the sanctuary mooring buoys rather than anchoring, as anchoring damages the coral. The buoys are 18 inches across with a blue stripe, free and first-come, and intended for daytime use only, not overnight. The site is open to most of the wind rose and offers little shelter in a blow.
Practical
No facilities on site. Molasses Reef Marina is 1.3 miles north and Key Largo Resorts Marina 2.4 miles north for fuel and provisions.
Ashore
Most of the reef sits within a Sanctuary Preservation Area where fishing and collecting are prohibited. It is one of the best-known dive and snorkel sites in the Upper Keys, with reef sections varying from shallow spur-and-groove to deeper ground.
