Anchorage on the Atlantic side of Tavernier Key, an uninhabited mangrove island in the Upper Florida Keys.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Anchoring is over a mix of sand, weed and mud, sheltered from NW through W by the key but open to the prevailing easterly quarter. The surrounding tidal flats are very shallow, so feel the way in by eye and stay outside the no-motor zone that rings the island. Tavernier Creek, the channel to Florida Bay, lies to the NW.
Practical
No facilities on the key itself. Curtis Marine and Blue Waters Marina of Tavernier are both about 1.1 nm to the NW on the mainland keys, reached through Tavernier Creek, with fuel, launch services and repairs.
Ashore
The island and its flats form the Tavernier Key Wildlife Management Area, 1.63 square miles of red mangrove and turtle-grass flats favoured by flats fishing guides. Egrets, herons, terns, cormorants and pelicans nest and feed on the larger islets.
