Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the west along the Scandola peninsula or from the south out of the Gulf of Porto. Mixed bottom of sand, rock and weed; set the anchor in a sand patch between rocks. Open from NE through SE; the libeccio from the west is the dominant risk and requires an early exit toward Porto or Girolata.
Practical
No services on the mooring. Porto-Ota, 5.4 NM east at the head of the gulf, has a small quay, shops and restaurants. Port de Girolata, 6.7 NM north, is accessible only by boat or on foot.
Ashore
Coast lies within the Golfe de Porto UNESCO World Heritage site that covers the Scandola nature reserve, the Calanche de Piana and the Gulf of Girolata. Hiking paths connect Girolata to Col de la Croix. Landing ashore at the Rocher is limited by cliffs.
History
Scandola became France's first combined land and sea nature reserve in 1975 and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1983.
