Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter via the Grau-du-Roi channel and head north along the canal. Sand and mud bottom with good holding. Sheltered from wind on all quadrants thanks to the canal banks, but current runs with wind and lock operations. Keep clear of the commercial and fishing channel used by trawlers and barges.
Practical
No services at the anchorage. Port Public d'Aigues-Mortes at 0.2 NM N for water and fuel, Marina Port du Roy at 0.7 NM N.
Ashore
Medieval ramparts of Aigues-Mortes built under Louis IX from 1272, 1.6 km of walls still complete, within walking distance. Tour de Constance and Place Saint-Louis at 400 m. Salins du Midi visitor centre at 2 km with tours of the pink salt pans.
History
Aigues-Mortes was built by Louis IX as the only royal port on the Mediterranean coast of the kingdom of France. He sailed from here for the Seventh Crusade in 1248 and the Eighth Crusade in 1270.
