Approach and anchoring
Access from the Mediterranean via Grau-du-Roi and Le Grau-du-Roi lock, then the Canal du Rhône à Sète. Inland canal, no tide. Freycinet gauge, air draught limited by the bridges of the canal, typically 3.50 m.
Practical
Member berths with water and electricity on the pontoons. Sanitaires and showers on site. Chandlery, mechanics and boatyards within the Aigues-Mortes port area. Supermarket and all shops inside the walled town, about 800 m on foot.
Ashore
Ramparts of Aigues-Mortes built under Louis IX from 1272, classified monument historique, full walk on the walls possible. Tour de Constance at the north-west angle. Salins du Midi salt works visible to the south, guided train tour available. Camargue horse and flamingo country starts immediately outside the walls.
History
Aigues-Mortes was founded as the royal port from which Louis IX sailed on the Seventh Crusade in 1248 and the Eighth Crusade in 1270. The Tour de Constance later served as a prison for Huguenot women after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685.
