Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Gulf of Lion on a low coast without natural landmarks, entry marked by red and green jetty heads and a buoyed channel dredged to about 4 m. The tramontane from the NW and the marin from the SE generate a heavy cross sea at the entrance. VHF 9. Max draught 4.5 m in the outer marina.
Practical
Capitainerie open all year. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol at the entrance, water and electricity on every pontoon, sanitary blocks throughout the marina. Two boatyards with travel lifts up to 100 t, dry storage for more than 1 000 boats. Supermarkets, chandlers and sailmakers on site.
Ashore
Plage du Boucanet and Plage Sud at the marina exits, sand beaches several kilometres long. Cycle path into the Camargue regional nature park along the Canal du Rhone a Sete, flamingo colonies visible from the path. Aigues-Mortes and its 13th century ramparts 6 km inland.
History
Port Camargue was designed by architect Jean Balladur as part of the Racine plan for the Languedoc coast and opened in 1969, laid out as a series of private marinas integrated with housing marinas a quai.
Story
Port Camargue is the largest leisure marina in Europe by number of berths, with about 5 000 wet berths plus several hundred more dry-stacked.
