Approach and anchoring
Approach across the rade de Brest, keeping clear of the shipping lane and the naval zones of the French Navy. Sand holding. Open to SW swell rolling in from the goulet. VHF 9 for Brest harbour control.
Practical
Anchoring only, no shore facilities on site. Brest Marina du Château lies 3,2 NM NW with diesel, water, electricity and a 35 t travel lift. Brest Kayak Sante centre at 3,6 NM N.
Ashore
City of Brest 3,2 NM NW with the Chateau de Brest dating to the Roman castrum and housing the Musee National de la Marine, and the submarine base at Laninon. Oceanopolis aquarium in Moulin Blanc, the largest marine centre in France with over 10 000 animals.
History
The rade de Brest has been a French naval base since Cardinal Richelieu founded the arsenal in 1631. The city was flattened in 1944 during the siege of Brest and rebuilt in concrete by Jean-Baptiste Mathon.
