Marina of 500 berths along the Lez canal crossing the seaside town of Palavas-les-Flots, 12 km south of Montpellier.

Approach and anchoring

Sea entrance between two jetties with red and green lights, then the Lez canal runs through the town under several opening road bridges. Bridge openings scheduled several times a day in season, check the capitainerie schedule. Shallow channel bar after easterlies, dredged to around 3 m.

Practical

Five hundred berths on both banks of the Lez. Water, electricity, WiFi, sanitary blocks. The fluvial port and the Halte 0.3 to 0.5 NM east handle additional visitors and river-going boats heading up the canal du Rhône à Sète. All shops, market on Sunday morning, many restaurants along the quays.

Ashore

Sandy beaches either side of the canal mouth, accessible on foot from any berth. Phare de la Méditerranée, a 45 m former water tower converted into a panoramic viewpoint and restaurant, 300 m from the port. Petit Train de Palavas links both banks in summer, on the route of the old line painted by Albert Dubout.

History

Palavas grew from a fishing hamlet after the arrival of the Montpellier tramway in 1872 and the railway in 1875, which made it the seaside resort for the university city. Cartoonist Albert Dubout spent his summers here from the 1930s and drew the crowded beach and the Petit Train; a museum on Île du Levant displays his work.
