Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the sea through the commercial port entrance, jetties marked by red and green lights. Priority to commercial traffic, contact on VHF 12. The Robine branch opens north of the main basin, with a railway swing bridge that operates on request during daylight.

Practical

Quay used for short stops while waiting for bridge openings or lock schedules on the Canal de la Robine. Water points nearby. All shops in Port-la-Nouvelle town within 500 m: supermarket, bakery, chandlery.

Ashore

Town beach on the south side of the channel, 600 m from the quay, long sand strip running south along the Narbonnaise coast. Narbonne by train in 15 minutes from the station 400 m away, with the Cathedral of Saint-Just and the Roman Horreum. Start of the Canal de la Robine towpath for walking or cycling inland.

History

The Canal de la Robine is the maritime outlet of the Canal du Midi, linked to the main canal by the Canal de Jonction near Sallèles-d'Aude. Both canals are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1996. Port-la-Nouvelle itself developed as a commercial port in the nineteenth century on the spit between the sea and the Bages-Sigean lagoon.
