Guide
Approach and anchoring
Entrance at the mouth of the Giscle river, on the west shore of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Dredged channel with red and green jetty lights. Maximum draught 3 m. Exposed to the east wind which sets a chop across the gulf. Call on VHF 9 before entering. Saint-Tropez lies 3 nautical miles across the bay to the east.
Practical
2050 berths across three harbour basins, Port 1, Port 2 and Port 3. Water, electricity, diesel and petrol at the fuel berth. Sanitary blocks on each pontoon, capitainerie open year-round. Supermarkets and all shops within 400 m, market on Thursday and Sunday mornings on place du Marché.
Ashore
Lacustrine village by François Spoerry with its canals, bridges and Église Saint-François-d'Assise of 1969 whose tower offers a view over the gulf. Plage de Port-Grimaud starting at the south jetty. Medieval village of Grimaud and the Château des Grimaldi ruins at 4 km inland.
History
Port-Grimaud was designed from 1966 by Alsatian architect François Spoerry on reclaimed marshland. The village was classified as 20th-century heritage by the French Ministry of Culture in 2002.
Story
François Spoerry refused to sell any of the houses to companies or rental pools, to keep the village as a lived-in place. He himself is buried in the small lakeside chapel he designed.
