Approach and anchoring

Reached from the bay of Benodet by following the buoyed Odet channel for 8 NM, winding between wooded banks. Tidal access only, plan to arrive between HW minus 2 and HW. Speed limited to 5 knots above the Pont de Poulguinan. Charted depths drop below 1 m near low water at the upper reaches, deep-keeled yachts should confirm tides. VHF 16.

Practical

Working quay used by sand barges and a small number of visiting yachts, water on the quay, no dedicated sanitary block. Bus line 6 to Quimper city centre 3 km north. Chandlery and yards in Benodet and Sainte-Marine if supplies are needed before the river passage.

Ashore

Quimper old town at 3 km north by bus or on foot along the Odet, with the Saint-Corentin cathedral begun in 1239 and the Faience Museum dedicated to the local tin-glazed pottery tradition since 1690. Mont Frugy viewpoint over the city at 3.2 km. The Odet valley footpath runs along the wooded banks between Corniguel and Quimper.

History

The Corniguel has been the river port of Quimper since the Middle Ages, when cogs loaded salt, wine and faience for export. It is today the last active commercial quay on the Odet, still receiving sand dredged from the bay of Benodet.
