Approach and anchoring
Reached from the Golfe de Fos through the Canal de Caronte, then north into the channels that cross the town. Keep to the marked fairway, speed limited inside the urban canals. Tirant d'eau up to 1.8 m. Beware of the road bridges whose opening times are posted at the capitainerie.
Practical
Quayside berthing along the canal walls in the town centre. Water and electricity on the quay. Shops, bakeries and restaurants along the banks within a few metres. Club Nautique Martigues adjoining the port on the south side.
Ashore
Miroir aux Oiseaux painted by Ziem and Corot at 150 m on the eastern quay. Musée Ziem with a Provençal collection at 600 m. Market on Thursday and Sunday morning on the cours du 4 Septembre at 400 m.
History
Jonquières is one of the three original villages, with Ferrières and L'Île, whose 1581 merger formed Martigues. The canals were dug between the 17th and 19th centuries to drain the marshes and connect the Étang de Berre to the sea.
