Approach and anchoring
Reach Martigues through the Canal de Caronte from the Golfe de Fos, 3 NM of buoyed channel with lifting road bridge at Jonquières. Sand and mud bottom, good holding. Open to NW, W and SW wind, the mistral funnels down the étang. Port de Ferrières is 0.6 NM SW, CNM Club Nautique Martigues 0.8 NM S.
Practical
Visitor berths available at Port de Ferrières inside the canal. Fuel, water and electricity at the marina. Full range of shops, bakery, supermarket and restaurants within 300 m of the quays.
Ashore
Ferrières, Jonquières and L'Île districts meet at the Quai Brescon. Musée Ziem on quai des Anglais, home to works by Félix Ziem and other Provençal painters, 400 m from the anchorage. Saturday and Sunday market on cours du 4-Septembre.
History
Martigues grew from three fishing villages united in 1581 by Henri III into a single town. The Canal de Caronte was deepened from 1863 to connect the étang de Berre to the sea for commercial traffic.
