Approach and anchoring

Entry through the Passe de l'Ouest or Passe de l'Est of the Grande Rade, then south towards the marina basin. Maximum draught 3 m at the pontoons. Accessible at all tides. VHF 9 for the harbourmaster.

Practical

1600 berths including 240 for visitors. Fuel berth open year-round with diesel and petrol. Water and electricity at all pontoons. Travel-lift and boatyard on site. Ship chandlers, sailmakers and riggers around the basin.

Ashore

Cité de la Mer maritime museum with the submarine Le Redoutable, 400 m from the pontoons. Town centre with shops and restaurants from 500 m. Ferry terminal to Portsmouth, Poole and Rosslare at the eastern end of the harbour.

History

The Cherbourg roadstead was built between 1783 and 1853 under Louis XVI then Napoleon III to shelter the French fleet. Its outer breakwater stretches over 3.6 km, the longest in the world.
