Full-service marina on the Merrimack River at Newburyport, Massachusetts, about 2.5 miles upstream of the river mouth.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
The Merrimack entrance is one of the more demanding bars on the US east coast. A shifting sandbar between the stone jetties shoals badly, and easterly swell against a strong ebb builds steep breakers. A lighted fairway whistle buoy about 1 mile off the jetties marks the approach. Cross near slack water and call the marina on VHF 74.
Practical
Around 70 deep-water berths for seasonal and transient boats up to 70 feet. Fuel berth with petrol and diesel pumps, water, shore power, Wi-Fi, showers and heads, laundry and a ship's store with bait, tackle and chandlery items. Gated site in central Newburyport.
Ashore
Downtown Newburyport sits a short walk away, with shops and restaurants along the waterfront. The Clipper City Rail Trail for walking and cycling starts near the harbour and runs through town.
