Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the main estuary channel then follow the buoyed secondary channel into the port. The access channel dries partially at low water springs, tidal gate open roughly 3 hours either side of high water. Call VHF 9 before entry.
Practical
260 pontoon berths, water and electricity, showers, capitainerie open year-round. Bakery, grocer and restaurants within 300 m. No dedicated fuel berth on site.
Ashore
Troglodyte cliff dwellings of the Regulus and Matata caves carved into the estuary chalk cliffs, 600 m west of the port, visitor centre and guided tours. Coastal path from the port to Talmont-sur-Gironde at 3 km, a village listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.
History
The chalk cliffs around Meschers were inhabited from the 15th century onwards, first by fishermen and later used as refuges by Protestants during the Wars of Religion.
