Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Gironde estuary channel, heading north-east along the right bank from the Pointe de Suzac. Strong tidal streams in the estuary, up to 3 knots on spring tides. Port dries at low water, enter on the flood.
Practical
Small pleasure port with limited berths, mainly used by local boats and visitors on a tide. Water on quay. Bakery, grocery and restaurants in the village within 300 m of the port.
Ashore
Village of Talmont-sur-Gironde listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France, on a limestone headland 20 m above the estuary. Sainte-Radegonde church on the cliff edge at the north of the village, Romanesque architecture from the late 12th century. Meschers-sur-Gironde with its troglodyte cliff dwellings 2.1 NM NW.
History
Talmont was founded as a fortified bastide in 1284 by Edward I of England, then Duke of Aquitaine, on a grid plan still visible in the street layout. The Sainte-Radegonde church served as a beacon for pilgrims sailing up the estuary toward Saintes and Santiago de Compostela.
