Approach and anchoring
Approach from seaward on a clear bearing. Mixed sand and rock bottom, sound before letting go the hook. Shelter from NW, N and NE, which covers the mistral and the tramontane. Fully exposed from E to S.
Practical
No facilities on site. Port Camargue, 4.2 nm NW, is one of the largest marinas in Europe with fuel, water and full chandlery. Le Grau-du-Roi fishing harbour lies 4.8 nm NW.
Ashore
Espiguette beach stretches for about 10 km of dunes west of the anchorage, part of the Conservatoire du Littoral holdings. Salt marshes and flamingo lagoons of the Camargue start immediately inland. Aigues-Mortes and its 13th century ramparts, built under Louis IX as a crusader port, are 6 km north of Le Grau-du-Roi.
History
Le Grau-du-Roi was cut in 1725 to give Aigues-Mortes a new sea outlet after the original harbour silted up.
