Approach and anchoring

Approach from seaward, the coast is low and featureless with few landmarks. Water tower and the lighthouse of L'Espiguette 2 NM SW serve as reference points. The Espiguette shoal extends SSE of the point. Port Camargue entrance is 1.3 NM to the NE, Le Grau-du-Roi fishing harbour 2.5 NM NE.

Practical

No services at the anchorage. Port Camargue marina has over 5000 berths, fuel, chandlery and yard services. Le Grau-du-Roi has shops and restaurants along the canal.

Ashore

Plage de l'Espiguette, 18 km of dunes classified Natura 2000, accessible on foot from the anchorage. Camargue natural regional park inland with bull herds and pink flamingos at the Scamandre visitor centre, 12 km away. Aigues-Mortes fortified city 7 km north, ramparts built by Louis IX in the 13th century.

History

Louis IX embarked from nearby Aigues-Mortes for the Seventh Crusade in 1248 and the Eighth in 1270. The harbour was then on the shore, silting has since pushed the coast 6 km south.
