Cove on the Guilford shore of Long Island Sound, Connecticut, just north of the Sachem's Head peninsula, with a bottom of rock and mud.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter from Long Island Sound, working in past the Sachem's Head headland. The cove shelters winds from NW through NE; the southern sector is open to the Sound. Sound the way in carefully as rock patches lie under the mud. Sachem's Head Yacht Club is 0.5 mile to the south, Brown's Boatyard 1.8 miles to the NE.
Practical
No facilities in the cove itself. Brown's Boatyard, 1.8 miles to the NE, handles haul-out and repairs. Note that parts of Joshua Cove are classed as conditionally approved seasonal shellfish ground by the State of Connecticut.
History
The Sachem's Head name dates to the Pequot War of 1637, when English soldiers and their allies executed three Pequot sachems on the neighbouring neck of land. The headland later grew into a summer resort, and Sachem's Head Yacht Club was founded there in 1896.
