Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the W, leaving the Videcoq west cardinal to the south. Entry channel dredged and marked by red and green buoys, with a sill retaining water at 6 m above chart datum. The sill submerges from roughly HW -2h30 to HW +2h30 on average tides. Max draught 2.5 m inside the basin. Tidal range up to 14 m at springs. VHF channel 9.
Practical
1000 berths, about 90 for visitors. Water and electricity on pontoons. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol at the entrance of the basin. Showers, toilets, laundry, capitainerie open year round. Shipyard with 50 t travel lift. Shops, bakeries and supermarket in Granville upper town, 10 minutes on foot.
Ashore
Christian Dior museum and garden, in the couturier's childhood home, is 900 m from the marina along the coastal path. Haute Ville of Granville, fortified by Louis XI in 1439, sits above the port. Ferries to the Chausey archipelago depart from the adjacent commercial quay, 30 minutes crossing.
History
Granville was fortified by the English in 1439 during the Hundred Years' War and taken back by the French the following year. The port long served the Terre-Neuvas cod fleet, the last of which sailed in 1972. The marina was opened in 1975 and extended in the 2000s.
Story
Granville holds the largest tidal range on the French mainland, peaking at 14.5 m at the spring equinox, a fact that forces the port to rely on a retaining sill to stay usable.
