Guide
Approach and anchoring
Sits some 32 miles upriver from the sea on the wide, fresh-water reach of the St Johns. The width and depth of the river here, with no risk of storm surge so far inland, make it a recognised hurricane hole. Approach depth is around 14 feet and dockside depth around 11 feet.
Practical
140 wet berths taking vessels up to 60 feet, with shore power, water and pump-out. Around 65 acres of dry storage plus 50 dry slots for boats up to 30 feet. A 30-ton travel lift with a 15-foot maximum beam serves a do-it-yourself boatyard with in-house craftsmen. Full fuel dock with petrol and diesel.
History
Green Cove Springs hosted one of the United States Navy's largest reserve fleets after 1945. More than 600 mothballed warships were laid up here, and thirteen concrete piers, each 1,800 feet long, were built on the St Johns in 1947. The fleet was dispersed and the base closed in 1961.
