Municipal free dock on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway at Great Bridge, Chesapeake, Virginia, at ICW Mile 12 of the Virginia Cut route.

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal. The dock sits between the Great Bridge Lock and the Great Bridge swing bridge, on the south side of the cut. The lock works on VHF 13. The swing bridge opens on the hour. Top Rack Marina lies 2.8 NM west for fuel and a meal at the Amber Lantern restaurant.

Practical

About 200 ft of bulkhead, no power and no water. 24-hour limit strictly enforced by the City of Chesapeake. A second free dock of similar length lies just east of the bridge, adjacent to Great Bridge Battlefield Park. First-come, first-served.

Ashore

Kroger supermarket, pharmacy and half a dozen restaurants are within half a mile of Dock 1. Great Bridge Battlefield and Waterways Historic Park, on the east side, marks the December 1775 engagement that drove British forces from Virginia early in the Revolutionary War.
