Approach and anchoring
Anchor south and west of the channel near the red marker off the brick naval hospital, in 8 to 9 feet of water over mud. The bottom holds well and the spot is sheltered from NW through SW. Watch for commercial traffic and tugs in the main channel.
Practical
Dinghy landing for a fee at Tidewater Yacht Marina 0.4 miles SE and Waterside Marina 0.5 miles E. Downtown Portsmouth and Norfolk waterfront sit within walking distance of either landing for provisions.
History
Hospital Point was the site of a fort during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 and of a Confederate battery during the Civil War. The Portsmouth Naval Hospital, built on the point between 1827 and 1833, was the first naval hospital constructed in the United States.
