Anchorage on the Frederica River, a side channel of the Intracoastal Waterway along St. Simons Island in Georgia, on a bottom of sand and mud.

Approach and anchoring

The Frederica River branches off the ICW and rejoins it near mile marker 674. Depths in the river run from eight to ten feet. A fixed bridge on the channel has a nine foot vertical clearance. St. Simons Marina lies 1.4 miles to the south.

Ashore

Fort Frederica National Monument stands on the riverbank, the earthwork and town site of the fort James Oglethorpe built in 1736. The National Park Service runs a visitor centre and a marked walking trail through the ruins. The Battle of Bloody Marsh site is part of the same monument.

History

James Oglethorpe established Fort Frederica in 1736 to hold the southern boundary of the new colony of Georgia against Spanish Florida. Troops from the fort defeated a Spanish force at the Battle of Bloody Marsh in 1742, settling Georgia's future as a British colony.
