Public marina at Gascoigne Bluff Park on the Frederica River, St. Simons Island, run by the St. Simons Boating and Fishing Club for Glynn County.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached off the Frederica River, just inside St. Simons Sound and close to the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Around 1,200 linear feet of dockage. Tidal range exceeds 2 metres on this stretch of the Georgia coast, so check the stream before berthing alongside.
Practical
Fuel, bait and ice are sold on site. The marina serves mainly local boaters and trailer launches. Downtown St. Simons Island village, with shops and restaurants, lies a few minutes inland from Gascoigne Bluff.
Ashore
Gascoigne Bluff Park surrounds the marina, with live oak avenues that once supplied timber for early US Navy warships. Fort Frederica National Monument, the 1736 British fort on the Frederica River, is about 6 km north. The 1872 St. Simons Lighthouse stands near the village pier.
History
Gascoigne Bluff served as Georgia's first naval base in colonial days and is named after James Gascoigne, captain of HMS Hawk, which escorted the first English settlers to St. Simons Island in 1736.
