Guide
Approach and anchoring
The Darien River runs off the Altamaha and carries a strong tidal current, so plan arrival and departure around slack water. Holding is on mud.
Practical
Skipper's Fish Camp has public slips, a floating dock for tenders and kayaks, and a boat ramp. Fresh water is available. McIntosh Rod and Gun Club lies 3.2 nm north-east and Hampton River Marina 6.5 nm south-east.
Ashore
Darien's historic waterfront is a short walk, with the tabby ruins of nineteenth-century timber warehouses built from oyster-shell lime. Fort King George State Historic Site, a reconstructed 1721 cypress blockhouse, is about 1 mile east. Every spring the town holds the Blessing of the Fleet, a shrimp-boat parade down the river.
History
Darien was founded in 1736 when General Oglethorpe settled Scottish Highlanders here, on the site of Fort King George, England's southernmost North American outpost from 1721 to 1727. The town grew into a major timber export port until 1925.
